June 15: The Miracle of Surrender: The Brad Willey Story
Scripture Reading: "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now love in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." — Galatians 2:20
Have you ever felt like you were running a race with no finish line, desperately clutching onto control while everything around you slowly crumbles? It is an exhausting way to live, waking up every morning to shoulder the burdens of your own expectations, fears, and unmet desires. When we fight so hard to protect our own version of safety, we inadvertently construct a prison out of our own plans. We begin to mistake our frantic striving for strength, unaware that the very things we refuse to let go of are the things holding us back from true freedom.
Brad Willey spent years navigating this exact internal battle, running hard from a quiet, persistent calling that he didn't want to hear. He built his life on his own terms, striving for a sense of security and identity that was entirely dependent on his own strength and professional success. Even when he felt a distinct, still small voice prompting him toward a deeper spiritual path, he kept his hands tightly closed around his own ambitions. It was a season of comfortable resistance, a period where he was physically moving forward but spiritually standing completely still in the dark.
The absolute breaking point arrived when life brought him face-to-face with a catastrophic landslide—a sudden, violent crisis that shattered his illusions of control in a single evening. Standing amidst the ruin of what he had built, the devastating weight of his vulnerability became a blinding, inescapable reality that he could no longer outrun. In the deafening silence that followed the disaster, the desperate realization that his own hands were powerless to fix the wreckage left him feeling utterly stuck and empty. This is the place where the human ego fractures, and the terrifying question of who we are when our foundations are stripped away becomes a heavy, constant cry.
Yet, in that deep and empty valley of loss, Brad discovered that the end of his own strength was the exact place where divine power was waiting to begin. Instead of trying to gather the broken pieces of his old life, he finally opened his hands, stopped fighting, and surrendered his entire future unconditionally to Christ. This radical shift changed everything; he was introduced to a new horizon of hope and purpose, eventually transitioning into a global calling as the executive director of Mission Eurasia. God took his survival and his sudden obedience, transforming a moment of earthly devastation into a lifeline of spiritual rescue for people all over the world. This inspiring testimony demonstrates that even in our darkest moments of brokenness, God's grace can rebuild a shattered life, turning pain into a beautiful and impactful witness.
It serves as a living illustration that the things we lose are nothing compared to the boundless life we receive when we stop holding on to what doesn't matter. When we release our grip on our own lives, we find that we are finally free to be held by the One who specializes in beautiful restorations. Our scars cease to be reminders of a destructive storm and become radiant proof of a clean slate and a brand-new horizon.
Reflection Questions:
Brad spent years resisting a quiet prompting from God because he was holding tightly to his own plans. What is something in your life right now that you are afraid to hand over to God, and what is keeping you from letting it go?
A sudden crisis forced Brad to realize that his own strength was an illusion. How can facing a situation completely beyond your control become an opportunity to practice radical surrender rather than despair?
