September 7: The Majesty of the Storm

When was the last time you paused your busy routine simply to stand still and marvel at the incredible majesty of the Creator? Remembering who God is puts all our earthly troubles back into their proper perspective.

Elihu concluded his discourse by directing Job’s attention upward to the magnificent wonders of the natural world, pointing to the gathering storm clouds, the lightning, the snow, and the roar of the thunder. He argued that our small human righteousness does not add anything to God, nor does our sin diminish His absolute sovereignty, for He is exalted far beyond our reach. Urging Job to "stand still and consider the wondrous works of God," Elihu described the incredible mystery of the weather systems, setting the stage for the Lord Himself to speak out of the whirlwind.

The painful limitation we often suffer from is having a view of God that is far too small, reducing the Creator of the universe to a manageable helper who exists only to serve our convenience. When we view God through the small lens of our temporary problems, our trials feel overwhelming and our God seems weak and distant. This lack of holy wonder leaves us vulnerable to anxiety, discouragement, and spiritual nearsightedness.

This magnificent passage invites us to transition from self-absorbed anxiety to breathtaking awe before the Almighty. The same sovereign God who commands the lightning, guides the storm clouds, and sustains the entire cosmos is the One who holds your life in His hands. When you stand still and meditate on the wondrous works of God, your worries shrink in the light of His infinite wisdom, power, and everlasting love.

As Ellen White beautifully writes in Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 115, "The hand that sustains the worlds in space, the hand that holds in their orderly arrangement and tireless activity all things throughout the universe of God, is the hand that was nailed to the cross for us."

Elihu commanded Job to "stand still and consider the wondrous works of God." How can you carve out intentional time today to step outside, observe nature, and reflect on God’s power?

How does recognizing that the God who controls the storms of nature is also the One who died for you help you trust Him with the storms in your personal life?
