September 15: The River of Blood

Can the idols and false securities of this world ever protect you when God's true authority is revealed? It is foolish to place our ultimate trust in things that can be effortlessly turned to ruin.

God reaffirmed His covenant name, Jehovah, promising Moses that He would bring Israel out with a high hand and redeem them with mighty judgments. When Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and it became a serpent, the Egyptian magicians copied the trick with their secret arts, though Aaron's rod swallowed theirs up. Pharaoh's heart hardened, and the first devastating plague fell: Aaron struck the sacred Nile River, and all its waters turned to blood, killing the fish, ruining the water supply, and humiliating the false river-gods of Egypt for seven days.

The sharp pain point exposed here is the stubborn blindness of the human heart when confronted by divine truth. Like Pharaoh, we often cling to our pride and look for cheap imitations or worldly excuses to justify our continued rebellion against God's commands. This stubborn resistance cuts us off from life-giving truth and turns the very things we rely on for comfort into sources of disgust and trouble.

This judgment calls us to transition from trusting in earthly securities to honoring the one true God who commands nature. The Nile was Egypt’s greatest source of wealth, agriculture, and religious pride, yet God turned it into an unusable stream of death with a single strike of a shepherd’s rod. When you build your life on worldly wealth or human systems, you are building on a foundation that will eventually fail; only the Rock of Ages can sustain you.

As Ellen White highlights on page 265 of Patriarchs and Prophets, "The Nile was an object of worship... In turning its water to blood, God not only judged the nation, but struck at the very heart of their idolatrous religion."

The Egyptian magicians copied the miracle until Aaron’s rod swallowed up theirs. How can you discern between genuine divine truth and deceptive, worldly imitations today?

God struck the Nile, which was Egypt's primary source of pride and security. Are there any earthly securities you are relying on more than you rely on God?
