September 25: Shared Leadership and Wise Counsel

Are you trying to carry all your family, work, and ministry responsibilities entirely by yourself? Trying to be everyone’s sole problem-solver is a guaranteed recipe for personal exhaustion and burnout.

Moses' father-in-law, Jethro, brought Moses' wife and two sons back to him in the wilderness, rejoicing over all the great things God had done in delivering Israel from Pharaoh. The next day, Jethro watched with deep concern as Moses sat alone from morning until evening, listening to endless disputes and judging every single problem for millions of people. Jethro stepped in with wise, loving advice, warning Moses that he would wear himself out and urging him to appoint capable, God-fearing men of truth to judge smaller matters while Moses focused on teaching God’s laws and interceding in prayer.

The heavy friction point many dedicated servants face is the trap of micromanagement and pride in being needed. We convince ourselves that if we do not handle every detail ourselves, things will fall apart, or that no one else can do the job with our level of care. This exhausting habit drains our emotional energy, strains our physical health, and neglects our own families while preventing others from developing their God-given gifts.

This practical chapter calls us to transition from isolated, overburdened striving to healthy, shared community leadership. Moses was the greatest prophet on earth, yet he demonstrated genuine humility by listening to the practical advice of his father-in-law and reorganizing the nation. When you choose to delegate responsibilities to trustworthy people of integrity, you protect your health, multiply your effectiveness, and build a stronger foundation for the future.

As Ellen White highlights on page 301 of Patriarchs and Prophets, "Moses listened to the counsel of his father-in-law, and chose able men... The Lord had greatly honored Moses, yet he did not conclude that he was above receiving counsel from a wise and experienced man."

Jethro outlined the qualities of good leaders: able, God-fearing, truthful, and hating covetousness. How are you cultivating these foundational character traits in your own life?
