September 21 : The Waters Parted

Have you ever watched an impossible barrier completely vanish before your eyes as you took a step of faith? Stepping forward when the path is not yet clear requires total trust in the voice of God.

The Lord commanded Moses to lift his rod, and as the great pillar of cloud moved behind the Israelites to block the Egyptians with darkness, an east wind blew all night, parting the Red Sea into towering walls of water. Israel walked across the dry seabed in safety, but when Pharaoh’s proud army charged into the channel after them, the Lord clogged their chariot wheels in confusion. At dawn, Moses stretched out his hand, and the massive waters collapsed upon the Egyptian host, sweeping away every chariot and rider until the dead lay washed upon the shore.

The sobering reality revealed in this story is the absolute destruction that awaits proud defiance against the Creator. Pharaoh and his commanders thought they could charge into a path made exclusively for God's covenant children, presuming that their worldly weapons could outrun divine justice. Chasing after God's people in pride always leads to sudden, overwhelming ruin when the Lord decides to defend His own.

This magnificent deliverance sparked a joyous transition from trembling fear to an explosion of triumphant praise. On the opposite shore, Moses and the entire congregation sang a glorious anthem of victory, while Miriam led the women with timbrels and dancing, magnifying the Lord as their strength and song. When God brings you safely through the deep waters of your trials, taking time to sing His praises cements a testimony of faith that will sustain you in future battles.

As Ellen White beautifully explains on page 288 of Patriarchs and Prophets, "The history of Israel’s deliverance at the Red Sea was recorded for the benefit of future generations... It teaches that God will work for His people when they move forward in faith, even when the way seems impassable."

Reflection Questions:

The Israelites had to step forward toward the sea before the waters parted completely. Is God asking you to take a practical step of obedience before you see how the situation will be resolved?

Moses and Miriam led Israel in a song of praise as soon as they reached the other side. How often do you pause to actively thank and praise God after He delivers you from a crisis?
