September 26: Standing at the Base of the Mountain

When was the last time you approached the presence of God with genuine awe and reverent preparation? Modern culture treats sacred things so casually that we easily lose our sense of God's holy majesty.

Three months after leaving Egypt, the children of Israel camped in the desert directly before Mount Sinai, where God announced His desire to make them a special treasure, a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. Before the Lord descended upon the mountain, the people were commanded to wash their clothes, consecrate their hearts, and set clear boundaries around the mountain base for three days. On the third morning, Mount Sinai was completely covered in thick smoke, fire, and thunder, shaking violently as the blast of a heavenly trumpet sounded longer and louder, calling Moses to ascend into the cloud.

The dangerous pain point in our modern spiritual walk is the casual, irreverent attitude we often bring into our worship of God. We rush into prayer with distracted minds, treat church services as casual social gatherings, and speak of the Almighty as though He were simply a peer. This lack of holy reverence numbs our conscience, makes us indifferent to the severity of sin, and blinds us to the absolute holiness of the One we serve.

This solemn encounter invites us to transition from shallow familiarity to deep, reverent awe before our holy Creator. God desired to impress the minds of a newly liberated slave nation with the eternal importance and sacredness of His moral government. When you take time to cleanse your thoughts, respect sacred boundaries, and approach God with humble reverence, your heart is properly prepared to receive His life-giving truth.

As Ellen White writes on page 303 of Patriarchs and Prophets, "The people were not only to wash their garments, but to cleanse their hearts from all sin... True reverence for God is inspired by a sense of His infinite greatness and a realization of His presence."
