May 3: Speaking Our Stutter

May 3: Speaking Our Stutter
Scripture: "In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways..." — Hebrews 1:1

If a world-renowned physicist wants to explain the beauty of the universe to a toddler, they don't use complex equations or abstract calculus. Instead, they sit on the floor and use colorful blocks. This is the essence of Divine Accommodation in communication. God is an infinite Spirit whose thoughts are as high above ours as the heavens are above the earth. In "Plan A," we would have understood His mind intuitively, but in "Plan B," God has to "stutter" in human language so that we can grasp the hem of His garment.

The Bible itself is a profound accommodation. It is God’s truth poured into the "cracked vessels" of human language, culture, and history. As BRI scholars often point out, God did not dictate the Bible word-for-word in a heavenly tongue; rather, He inspired human authors to express divine truth using their own vocabulary and style. He met the ancient Israelites where they were—with their specific metaphors of shepherds and kings—to lead them toward a higher understanding.

Ellen White emphasizes this in Selected Messages, noting that "the Bible is not given us in grand superhuman language." She explains that just as Jesus took on humanity to reach us, the Word of God took on the "garb" of human language. This isn't a weakness of the Bible; it is its greatest strength. It proves that God is willing to "limit" the expression of His infinite wisdom just so He can be understood by a struggling child.

This means that when we read the Bible, we aren't just reading data; we are seeing a God who is trying to build a bridge to our limited minds. He uses our concepts of "father," "home," and "shield" to explain a love that defies all categories. He accommodates our lack of vocabulary by telling stories, using parables, and painting pictures that stay in our hearts long after the words are read.

Today, when you find the Bible difficult to understand, remember that this is God’s Bridge. He isn't looking for you to become a linguistic expert; He is looking for you to hear the heartbeat of the Father beneath the human words. He spoke through the prophets and ultimately through His Son, proving that He will use whatever means necessary to ensure you know you are loved.

Reflection Questions:

How does it make me feel to know that God "simplifies" His thoughts just so I can have a relationship with Him?

When I read the Bible, do I get stuck on the "human" parts, or do I look for the Divine Love trying to break through?

How can I simplify the way I share God’s love with others so that I am building a bridge for them?
