April 16: The Great Physician
Scripture: "I am the Lord who heals you." — Exodus 15:26
Our God is deeply interested in our wholeness. He is not just the Savior of the soul, but the Physician of the body and mind. The Truth of the Gospel includes the restoration of all that sin has broken. When we bring our physical ailments and our mental struggles to Him, we are bringing them to the One who designed our complex systems and knows exactly how to fix them.
Healing often involves our cooperation with divine laws. God provides the power, but He often asks us to "wash in the pool" or "take up our mat." This means following the simple principles of health—proper diet, exercise, sunshine, and trust in His power. These are not "magical" cures, but the ways God has appointed for the restoration of health.
Love is a powerful medicine. Bitterness, anger, and worry are "toxic" to the body, contributing to many modern diseases. On the other hand, a heart full of gratitude and forgiveness releases healing influences. To be "spiritually healthy" is often the first step toward being "physically healthy."
If you are struggling with a health challenge today, remember that you are in the hands of the Great Physician. Use the means He has provided, but place your ultimate trust in His wisdom and love. He may heal the body now, or He may give you the strength to wait for the final restoration when "no one will say, 'I am sick.'"
Reflection Questions:
In what area of my life (physical or mental) do I need the "healing touch" of God today?
How can I better cooperate with God's "laws of health"?
Is there any "toxic emotion" I need to surrender for my own well-being?
