April 18: The Power of Prayer
Scripture: "The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much." — James 5:16
Prayer is "the opening of the heart to God as to a friend." It is not a ritual to be performed, but a conversation to be enjoyed. Through prayer, we align our will with the Truth of God's purpose and invite His Love to transform our circumstances. It is the breath of the soul, as essential to our spiritual life as oxygen is to our bodies.
We often think of prayer as a way to get what we want, but its primary purpose is to change us. As we spend time in God's presence, His priorities become our priorities. We begin to see people and problems through His eyes. Prayer doesn't move God closer to us; it moves us closer to God.
There is "irresistible power" in persistent prayer. We are encouraged to "pray without ceasing," maintaining a constant spirit of communion throughout the day. This doesn't mean being on our knees at all times, but having an "open line" to heaven. Whether we are at work, in the car, or at the grocery store, we can always whisper a prayer.
Today, treat prayer as a privilege rather than a duty. Tell God about your joys, your fears, and your mundane tasks. Listen for His voice in the quietness of your heart. You will find that the more you pray, the more you experience the peace that "passes all understanding."
Reflection Questions:
Do I talk to God like a "friend" or like a "distant official"?
What "noise" in my life is preventing me from hearing God's "still small voice"?
How can I maintain an "open line" of prayer throughout my busy day?
