April 19: The Fruit of the Spirit

April 19: The Fruit of the Spirit

Scripture: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control." — Galatians 5:22-23

In the orchards of April, we see the first signs of the coming harvest. Spiritually, our lives should be producing the "fruit of the Spirit." This fruit is the natural result of "abiding in the Vine." We cannot manufacture these qualities through sheer willpower; they are the "bloom" of a life that is fully surrendered to the Truth.

Note that the word is "fruit" (singular), not "fruits" (plural). All these qualities are interconnected aspects of a single character—the character of Christ. Love is the root, and all the others are the various expressions of that Love in different situations. Joy is love's strength; Peace is love's rest; Patience is love's endurance.

The health of the "tree" determines the quality of the fruit. If we are neglecting our spiritual health—our study, our prayer, our service—the fruit will be stunted or bitter. But if we are "well-watered" by the Word and "pruned" by the Holy Spirit, the fruit will be sweet and abundant, blessing everyone around us.

Take an "audit" of your spiritual fruit today. Are you growing in kindness and self-control? Don't be discouraged if you see "bruises" or "blights." The Great Gardener is still at work. Simply remain connected to Him, and the fruit will surely grow.

Reflection Questions:

Which aspect of the "Fruit of the Spirit" is most evident in my life right now? Which is most needed?

How does "abiding in the Vine" (staying connected to Jesus) practically happen for me?

What "pruning" (removing bad habits or attitudes) might God be doing in my life lately?
