April 21: The Power of Forgiveness
Scripture: "And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors." — Matthew 6:12
Forgiveness is the highest expression of Love. It is the "Truth of the Cross" applied to human relationships. Just as God has forgiven us an immeasurable debt, we are called to release those who have hurt us. Unforgiveness is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die; it destroys our own spiritual and physical health.
True forgiveness is not about "feeling" okay with what happened; it is an act of the will. it is choosing to release the right to seek revenge and leaving the case in the hands of the "Just Judge." When we forgive, we are not saying the offense didn't matter; we are saying that God’s grace matters more.
The Gospel is a "ministry of reconciliation." God's Truth doesn't just point out our faults; it provides the way to heal them. When we experience the "melting love" of God’s forgiveness, it becomes easier to extend that same love to others. A forgiven heart is a heart that is free to love without barriers.
Is there someone you need to forgive today? Perhaps it's even yourself. Bring that name before the Lord and ask for the strength to let go. Experience the "lightness" of a soul that is no longer carrying the heavy weight of resentment. In the "economy of heaven," forgiveness is the currency of peace.
Reflection Questions:
Who is someone I am "holding a debt" against in my heart?
How does God's forgiveness of me make it possible for me to forgive others?
What "weight" would be lifted if I chose to truly let go today?
