April 15: The Law of Liberty
Scripture: "But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it... this one will be blessed in what he does." — James 1:25
The Law of God is often viewed as a restrictive cage, but in Truth, it is a protective hedge. It is the "Law of Liberty" because it frees us from the destructive consequences of sin. Just as the laws of physics keep the universe from collapsing into chaos, the moral laws of God keep our lives from collapsing into misery.
Love is the fulfilling of the Law. If we love God with all our hearts, we will naturally want to honor His name and keep His Sabbath. If we love our neighbors as ourselves, we will naturally be honest, kind, and faithful. The Law is simply a description of how Love acts in practical situations. It is the character of God written in words.
When we try to keep the Law in our own strength, it becomes a heavy burden of legalism. But when we allow the Holy Spirit to write the Law on our hearts, it becomes a joy. We don't obey to be loved; we obey because we are loved. This is the "Truth that sets us free"—freedom from sin, not freedom to sin.
Take a moment to "look into the mirror" of God’s Law today. Don't look to see how many rules you've broken, but to see how much more you can grow in Love. Let the Ten Commandments be your guide to a life of peace, safety, and true liberty.
Reflection Questions:
Do I see God's Law as a "cage" or a "hedge"?
How does the concept of "Love as the fulfillment of the Law" change my view of obedience?
Which of the Ten Commandments speaks most to my need for "liberty" today?
