May 9: The Post-Flood Menu

Scripture: "Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything." — Genesis 9:3

In the original laboratory of Eden, the menu was clear: fruits, grains, and nuts. This "Plan A" diet was perfectly designed to sustain life without the need for death. However, after the Flood, the earth was a scoured wasteland. The lush vegetation was gone, and humanity faced immediate starvation. In an act of radical survival accommodation, God "permitted" the consumption of clean meats.

This was not God changing His mind about what is best for the human body; it was a "Plan B" concession to a broken environment. The BRI scholars note that this permission came with immediate warnings about blood and a notable decline in human longevity. God provided a way for His children to survive in a "Plan B" world, but He never intended for the accommodation to become the permanent ideal.

Ellen White, in Counsels on Diet and Foods, reminds us that the Adventist health message is a call to "return to the beginning." As we near the end of the Great Controversy, God is inviting us to step off the "Plan B" diet and reclaim the vitality of Plan A. It is not about legalistic "earning" of heaven; it is about a God who wants His children to have the "abundant life" He originally designed for them.

Today, our food choices are often driven by convenience or cravings. But when we view our health through the lens of Divine Accommodation, we realize that God is a "Social Reformer" for our own bodies. He meets us in our weakness, but He provides a "Bridge" of health principles to lead us back to a state of physical and mental clarity where we can hear His voice more clearly.

Choosing a "Plan A" lifestyle is an act of worship. It is saying, "Lord, I trust Your original design more than my current environment." Whether you are taking a small step toward a better diet or a big leap toward holistic health, know that God is cheering you on as you cross the bridge back to Edenic living.

Reflection Questions:

Do I see my health choices as a "burden of rules" or as an "invitation to Eden"?

What is one small "Plan A" habit I can start today to honor the body God gave me?

How does physical health impact my ability to perceive God’s spiritual leading?
