May 13: The "Plan B" of the Prodigal’s Brother

May 13: The "Plan B" of the Prodigal’s Brother

Scripture: "But he was angry and would not go in... And he said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours.'" — Luke 15:28, 31

The "Plan B" of Redemption is not just for the "wild sinners" (the younger brother); it is also for the "religious self-righteous" (the elder brother). The elder brother had his own "Plan A"—earning his father’s favor through hard work and obedience. When the "prodigal" was welcomed back, his "Plan A" was shattered by resentment.

God’s "Plan B" for the "elder brothers" is a "Heart Transformation." He wants us to move from "duty" to "delight." He wants us to realize that "all that He has is ours" not because we "earned" it, but because we are His "sons and daughters." The "Truth of Grace" is for the "good person" just as much as the "bad person."

Resentment is a "Health Hazard" for the soul. It "sours" the spirit and "clouds" the judgment. The Father went "out" to the elder brother, just as he "ran" to the younger brother. This is the "Inclusive Love" of God—He wants both brothers at the feast. His "Plan B" is for "Universal Reconciliation."

Are you struggling with the "spirit of the elder brother" today? Are you resentful of others who seem to "get away" with things while you "labor"? Come in to the feast. Let go of your "merit-based Plan A" and embrace the "grace-based Plan B." Everything the Father has is yours—just enjoy His presence.

Reflection Questions:
  1. In what ways do I act like the "elder brother" in my church or family?
  2. Do I believe that "all the Father has is mine" because of His grace or my work?
  3. How can I celebrate the "redemption of others" without feeling resentful?
