Sermon Summary: New Beginnings
by Pastor Fred Dana
Main Scripture
"Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."
2 Corinthians 5:17
Introduction
This presentation addresses the vital necessity of experiencing a genuine spiritual restart. The message connects a deeply personal journey through fresh, unexpected grief with the universal human struggle against a self-centered nature. It posits that the entire planet operates on a system of self-love that directly opposes the heavenly design. To resolve this conflict, a structured, mandatory transactional process is detailed, showing what is required for an individual to receive the transformative gift of a biblical new beginning.
The Three Main Points
The Universal Conflict of Principles: Self-Sacrificing Love vs. Selfishness
* Unfallen creation and the entire universe operate on the absolute foundation of self-sacrificing love.
* This principle is perfectly illustrated within the Godhead, where the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit maintain complete equality while willingly operating in perfect submission to one another.
* Planet Earth stands in stark opposition to heaven because it runs entirely on the corrupt principles of selfishness and self-love.
* Because the natural human inclination is completely incompatible with heaven, starting over is not optional. Unless an individual undergoes a total spiritual rebirth, it is completely impossible to see or enter the kingdom of God.
The Internal Transaction: Evicting and Crucifying the Old Man
* The human heart is desperately wicked and inherently deceptive, which frequently blinds individuals to their own deeply rooted self-centeredness.
* Believers must actively pray an intentional searching prayer, inviting God to expose their hidden thoughts and wicked ways.
* Scriptural guidelines make it clear that a transaction must take place: the old man must be entirely stripped away and put off before the new man can be put on, as the two natures cannot rule simultaneously.
* This process of letting go of self-love is described as being crucified with Christ. Just as Jesus had to experience intense, soul-searching agony in the Garden of Gethsemane before facing the physical nails of Calvary, dying to self is a profoundly painful reality. If the old nature is not put to death, a new beginning cannot occur.
True Justification and the Powerful Reality of Spiritual Change
* Salvation is entirely a merciful gift achieved through the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Spirit.
* If a message of righteousness by faith produces no tangible, powerful change in a person's life and character, it is an incomplete gospel and not the real biblical message.
* The ordinance of humility serves as the active, outward symbol of putting off the old man, as kneeling to serve another person directly forces the proud, selfish carnal nature to bow and die.
* Partaking of the communion elements directly symbolizes putting on the new man. Eating the bread signifies fully absorbing Christ's life into one's being, while drinking the cup signifies accepting the remission of sins and the empowering gift of the Holy Spirit.
Conclusion
While the ordinance of humility is solemn, the communion service is a time of profound joy and gratitude for heaven's greatest gift. Individuals are challenged to consecrate every unwanted season of life into a new era of walking closer to God than ever before. Believers are urged to view these ordinances as an intentional, daily cross-examination, ensuring they are consistently resting their confidence in an intercessor who actively lives for them in the heavenly sanctuary.
Quotes
* "The most important principle of the Godhead, the most important principle of the law of God, the most important principle of heaven, the most important principle of all creation is the principle of self-sacrificing love. All creation is built on it, and only planet Earth operates on the opposite principle of selfishness, self-love."
* "Crucifixion sounds painful, and we know it is, both literally and in the spiritual sense of dying to self-centeredness and sin. Yet a new beginning, a life in Christ, can't happen without that crucifixion."
* "You can't earn a new beginning. We can't deserve to be new creatures in Christ Jesus. It's 100% a gift. But that old man must be put aside, must be put to death. If he stays in charge, there is no place for a new life or a new beginning."
* "True righteousness by faith is not the theory and explanation of something. It's a powerful change in the life. If there's no change in the life, it's not the real message."
Reflection Questions
* Reflecting on the standard of perfect submission modeled by unfallen creation, in what areas of daily relationships is earthly self-love overwriting the heavenly principle of self-sacrificing love?
* Is there an active invitation for God to search the heart, or is a deceptive sense of moral comfort blinding the soul to old habits that still need to be crucified?
* How can participation in communion be treated not as a repetitive ritual, but as a highly intentional commitment to let the old man die so that Christ's character can practically reshape the home, workplace, and actions this week?
