August 1: Hospitable to Angels

Have you ever wondered if an ordinary act of kindness could completely change the direction of your life? In a world driven by self-interest, it is remarkably easy to pass by people in need without giving them a second thought.

Lot was sitting in the city gate of Sodom when two unknown travelers appeared in the evening light. Even though he lived in a deeply corrupt city that hardened most people's hearts, Lot immediately stood up, bowed politely, and invited them into his home for food and shelter. He did not know that these visitors were actually heavenly angels sent on a mission of divine judgment and rescue. His habitual practice of hospitality became the very open door that brought God's protective messengers directly into his household.

When we live with our doors closed and our hearts guarded, we end up missing out on the unexpected ways God wants to bless and protect us. It is exhausting to live constantly in self-defense mode, letting the coldness of the world dictate how we treat the people around us. When we choose to isolate ourselves, we inadvertently shut out the divine interventions meant to guide us through our darkest seasons.

This narrative provides a powerful transition from self-centered living to active, faith-filled service. By cultivating a warm, welcoming character, Lot showed that true faith is always expressed through practical love and generosity toward others. When you make room for others in your daily routine, you invite God's extraordinary presence and protection into your life in ways you never expected.

As the apostle Paul wisely wrote in Hebrews 13:2, "Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it."
