August 25: Safe in Goshen

Is it possible to step into major life changes in your older years without fear of losing your spiritual bearings? Relocating everything you have ever known requires deep confidence in God's guiding presence.

Hearing the stunning news that his beloved son Joseph was still alive and ruling over Egypt, aged Jacob’s spirit was revived, and he prepared to move his entire household. Stopping at Beersheba to offer sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac, the Lord appeared to Jacob in a night vision, assuring him not to fear going down to Egypt, for He would go with him and multiply his descendants there into a great nation. The entire family of seventy souls traveled in royal wagons provided by Pharaoh, arriving safely in the fertile, sheltered land of Goshen.

The heavy pain point many experience during major life transitions is the anxiety of stepping into unfamiliar territory where our spiritual values might be challenged. Leaving behind established routines, familiar communities, and comfortable environments can make us feel vulnerable and unanchored. When we face massive relocations or career shifts, fear whispers that we are risking our spiritual legacy and stepping into spiritual danger.

This narrative encourages us to transition from anxious dread to confident reliance on God's covenant promises. By pausing at Beersheba to d's permission and blessing before crossing the border, Jacob showed that obedience must always precede movement. When you place your major life transitions in God’s hands, He provides a "Goshen"—a protected, fruitful environment where your family can thrive spiritually even amidst a secular world.

As Ellen White reflects on page 232 of Patriarchs and Prophets, "Jacob’s heart was filled with joy and gratitude. He felt that the trials of his life were ended, and that his sun was setting in peace."

1. Jacob stopped at Beersheba to seek God's blessing before moving into Egypt. Do you make it a habit to pause and pray for God's clear confirmation before making major life moves or career changes?
2. Goshen kept Jacob's family separate from Egyptian idolatry while providing for their physical needs. How are you creating a spiritually safe, nurturing atmosphere in your home amidst a secular culture?
