August 28: Reassurance and a Coffin in Egypt

When the people who protected you are gone, do you trust that God’s promises of love and safety will still hold secure? Fear often tempts us to doubt that forgiveness is real when circumstances change.

Following the grand state funeral for Jacob back in Canaan, Joseph's brothers panicked, fearing that with their father dead, Joseph would finally unleash his stored-up vengeance and punish them for their past cruelty. Weeping at their persistent distrust, Joseph comforted them with tender words, famously affirming, "You meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive." Decades later, at the age of one hundred and ten, Joseph died in faith, giving strict instructions that his bones must not remain in Egypt, but be carried up to the Promised Land when God visited His people.

The painful issue exposed here is the lingering doubt that makes us question whether God—or others—can truly love and forgive us unconditionally. Even after years of experiencing Joseph's generosity, the brothers were still held hostage by their own guilty fears, assuming that human favor was fragile and temporary. Living in constant suspicion of God's grace prevents us from enjoying the full peace and security that Christ died to give us.

This powerful conclusion to Genesis guides us to transition from lingering guilt to complete rest in God’s redemptive purpose. Joseph’s final command regarding his bones stood as a visible sermon for four hundred years, reminding enslaved Israel in Egypt that their true home was elsewhere. When you anchor your faith in the ultimate promises of God, you can face death with absolute peace, knowing that this earthly exile is not your final destination.

As Ellen White highlights on page 240 of Patriarchs and Prophets, "Joseph’s life illustrates the life of Christ... It was Joseph's unselfishness, his integrity, and his faith that made him a savior to his people."
