September 3: Knowing the Way I Take

How do you stay faithful to God when you look for Him everywhere and cannot seem to find Him? The silence of God during intense trials is one of the deepest tests of human faith.

Eliphaz launched a completely baseless attack, falsely accusing Job of oppressing the poor, stripping the naked of clothing, and withholding bread from the hungry to justify his suffering. In response, Job longed to find God’s presence, lamenting that whether he went forward, backward, to the left, or to the right, he could not perceive the Almighty. Yet, despite being unable to see God’s hand, Job trusted God’s heart, declaring with profound conviction that God knew the way he took and that when the test was finished, he would come forth refined like pure gold.

The agonizing friction point here is the spiritual silence that often accompanies our darkest trials. We pray, search the Scriptures, and plead for a sense of divine comfort, yet the heavens seem completely silent and unmoved by our tears. This perceived distance tempts us to believe that God has abandoned us or that our past faithfulness was entirely in vain.

This chapter challenges us to transition from walking by visible feelings to resting in unwavering, tested trust. Job understood that the refining fire was not meant to consume his character, but to burn away the dross and purify his faith for eternity. When you cannot trace God’s working in your daily circumstances, trust His unchanging love and know that He is refining you for His eternal glory.

As Ellen White writes in Steps to Christ, p. 105, "God never leads His children otherwise than they would choose to be led, if they could see the end from the beginning, and discern the glory of the purpose which they are fulfilling as coworkers with Him."

2. Eliphaz judged Job’s character based on external circumstances rather than truth. How can you guard your mind against falsely assuming that someone’s personal suffering is proof of God’s disfavor?
