September 13: Signs, Excuses, and the Rod of God

What is holding you back from stepping forward when God gives you a clear assignment to complete? We love to pile up excuses when we are afraid of what obedience might cost us.

Still hesitating, Moses offered one excuse after another, worrying that the people would not believe him and arguing that he was not eloquent enough to speak to kings. God patiently showed him signs of power—turning his common wooden shepherd's staff into a serpent and making his hand leprous and whole again—before appointing his brother Aaron to help him speak. Yet, as Moses finally set out for Egypt, he was confronted by the Angel of the Lord at an inn because he had neglected to circumcise his son, showing that private family obedience must come before public leadership.

The painful friction point exposed here is the conflict between our public spiritual desires and our private compromises at home. We want to be used by God in big, noticeable ways, but we often overlook basic biblical duties and boundaries within our own households. This double standard robs us of our spiritual authority and places our families in danger, making us unfit to lead others until our own house is set in order.

This narrative challenges us to transition from offering excuses to practicing thorough, uncompromising obedience. God does not ask for special human credentials; He simply asks, "What is that in your hand?" and takes our ordinary tools to perform extraordinary wonders. When you address the neglected duties in your private life and offer what you have to Christ, your simple wooden staff becomes the mighty "rod of God."

As Ellen White warns on page 256 of Patriarchs and Prophets, "Moses was on his way to Egypt to deliver Israel... but he had neglected to obey the requirement of God in his own family. Those who are called to high positions of responsibility must show uncompromising obedience to all God's requirements."
