September 14:Bricks Without Straw

Why does life often seem to get much harder right after you decide to follow God's will? It is deeply discouraging when our initial steps of obedience are met with fierce resistance.

Moses and Aaron met with the elders of Israel, who rejoiced and bowed their heads in worship when they saw the signs and heard that God had visited them. But when the two brothers stood before Pharaoh and delivered God's message, the proud monarch arrogantly replied, "Who is the Lord, that I should obey His voice?" and instantly increased the slaves' workload, forcing them to gather their own straw while demanding the exact same daily quota of bricks. Beaten and exhausted, the Hebrew officers turned on Moses and blamed him, leaving Moses to cry out to God in deep confusion about why things had grown worse instead of better.

The agonizing pain point here is the shock of seeing trials escalate right after taking a stand for truth. We expect immediate peace and quick victories when we step out in faith, so when our circumstances suddenly deteriorate, we feel blindsided and disappointed. The enemy uses these moments to tempt us to give up, whispering that our efforts were a mistake and that God has abandoned us to our enemies.

This difficult chapter calls us to transition from evaluating our journey by short-term comfort to trusting in long-term deliverance. Pharaoh's furious backlash was not a sign that God had failed, but proof that the enemy's kingdom was being shaken to its very foundation. When your path becomes steeper after choosing to obey, stand firm; God allows human power to reach its limit so that His mighty arm can be revealed all the more clearly.

As Ellen White observes on page 260 of Patriarchs and Prophets, "Satan’s efforts to hold his captives were redoubled... But the apparent delay of deliverance was permitted that the hearts of the people might be tested, and that God’s power might be more fully revealed."

Things got much harder for Israel immediately after Moses obeyed God. Have you ever faced increased resistance or trouble right after deciding to do the right thing?

Moses took his frustration and confusion directly to God in prayer. How can you take your honest questions to God without losing faith in His ultimate promises?
