August 17: The Pit of Envy

August 17: The Pit of Envy

  • Bible Reading: Genesis 37
  • SOP Reading Reference: Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 209b–212
  • SOP Chapter Title: The Return to Canaan

Have you ever experienced the sting of being hated and betrayed by the very people who should have supported you? It is an agonizing trial when jealousy turns family members into bitter adversaries.

Joseph was his father’s favored son, marked by a coat of many colors and blessed with prophetic dreams showing his future leadership. Instead of rejoicing in God's promises, his older brothers allowed deep jealousy to fester in their hearts, eventually plotting his murder when he came to visit them in Dothan. This is the dark pain point where unchecked envy poisons human relationships, driving people to strip away a brother's dignity and cast him into a barren pit without a shred of pity.

The tragedy of this moment exposes the dangerous fallout of domestic favoritism and bitter resentment within a family circle. When we nurture feelings of envy toward someone else’s gifts or blessings, our conscience becomes hardened to the voice of the Holy Spirit. This lingering bitterness blinds us to the pain we inflict on others, creating a trail of deceit and grief that can haunt a household for decades.

This dark valley was the very staging ground where divine providence began orchestrating a greater plan of preservation. Even as Joseph was sold as a slave to Midianite traders and carried away into Egypt, the Lord remained with the lonely youth in his chains. When you face unfair betrayal and human cruelty, choosing to trust God's sovereignty turns a place of abandonment into the launching pad for your true purpose.

"Joseph's heart was deeply stirred... He had been a loving and tender son, but now all was changed. A slave, alone, friendless, in a strange land—what a fate was his!" (PP p213)

Reflection Questions:
Joseph's brothers allowed jealousy over a coat and dreams to turn into murderous hatred. Is there any hidden envy or comparison in your heart that you need to surrender to God before it damages a relationship?

Joseph was stripped of his coat and family support, but he was not stripped of God's presence. How does knowing that God is with you in unfair treatment give you strength to endure?
