August 21: From the Prison to the Palace

  • Bible Reading: Genesis 41:17-52
  • SOP Reading Reference: Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 220c–223
  • SOP Chapter Title: Joseph in Egypt

Can you stay entirely humble and point all the glory back to God when you are suddenly lifted from obscurity to the heights of worldly power? The test of prosperity is often far more dangerous to the soul than the test of adversity.

Standing before Pharaoh in clean garments, Joseph gave all credit to the Lord, boldly interpreting the monarch’s dreams of seven years of plenty followed by seven years of devastating famine. Impressed by his wisdom and the Spirit of God within him, Pharaoh removed his own signet ring, clothed Joseph in fine linen, and appointed the former slave as prime minister over all Egypt. This is the breathtaking turning point where years of patient endurance, moral steadfastness, and dungeon training were suddenly crowned with royal authority.

This dramatic elevation illustrates that the trials of our past are never meaningless suffering, but deliberate character preparation for heavy future responsibilities. Had Joseph not learned how to manage Potiphar’s estate and run an Egyptian prison, he would not have possessed the administrative stamina required to save an entire world from starvation. When we submit our will to the Potter's hand during seasons of difficulty, He builds in us the spiritual maturity needed to handle great blessings without falling into pride.

Through this inspiring history, we see that the true purpose of God’s elevation is never personal luxury, but the preservation and blessing of others in their time of need. Joseph immediately went to work storing grain during the years of abundance, naming his sons Manasseh and Ephraim to testify that God had made him fruitful in the land of his affliction. When you allow Christ to heal the bitterness of your past trials, your life becomes an abundant storehouse of hope for a hungry world.

As Ellen White writes on page 222 of Patriarchs and Prophets, "From the dungeon Joseph was exalted to be ruler over all the land of Egypt... It was his wisdom and foresight that saved the kingdom from ruin."

Reflection Questions:
When Pharaoh asked Joseph for an interpretation, Joseph’s immediate answer was, "It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace." Do you quickly give God the glory when you receive praise for your talents and work?

Joseph used the seven years of plenty to prepare diligently for the coming years of famine. How are you stewarding your current spiritual, physical, and financial blessings to prepare for future trials?
