August 23: The Test of Brotherly Love

  • Bible Reading: Genesis 43:1–44:2
  • SOP Reading Reference: Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 227b–229a
  • SOP Chapter Title: Joseph and His Brothers

How far are you willing to go to protect and serve someone else when it costs you your own comfort? Real love is measured by our readiness to bear burdens on behalf of others.

As the famine worsened and food ran out, Jacob had no choice but to let Benjamin travel to Egypt with the brothers, with Judah stepping forward as personal surety to guarantee the youth's safe return. Upon their arrival, Joseph welcomed them with an abundant banquet, deliberately testing their reactions by serving Benjamin a portion five times larger than anyone else's. Instead of showing the bitter jealousy that had consumed them years earlier in Dothan, the brothers rejoiced with Benjamin, proving that their hearts were beginning to change.

The sharp pain point many of us face is the reflex to feel resentful when someone else receives extra honor, attention, or favor. Insecurity whispers that someone else's blessing somehow diminishes our own value, tempting us to react with envy, coldness, or subtle sabotage. This competitive spirit poisons homes, teams, and congregations, choking out genuine joy and dividing people who should stand united.

This moment challenges us to transition from self-centered comparison to sincere brotherly love and mutual honor. By celebrating Benjamin’s special favor without bitterness, the brothers showed that they were overcoming the toxic patterns that had once shattered their household. When you choose to genuinely rejoice in the blessings and elevation of others, you dismantle the power of jealousy and invite the peace of God into your relationships.

As Ellen White highlights on page 228 of Patriarchs and Prophets, "They were treated with marked favor, and as they feasted together, their fears were dispelled... Joseph looked with deep interest to see if they would manifest envy toward the favored brother."

Reflection Questions:
  1. The brothers did not show jealousy when Benjamin was given five times as much. Do you struggle with envy when a colleague, friend, or family member receives special recognition or blessing?
  2. Judah pledged his own life to guarantee Benjamin's safety. How can you take active responsibility to protect, support, and encourage the vulnerable people in your circle this week?
